Transferrin
TRANSFERRIN (fasted, serum)
Transferrin is a protein produced in the liver which binds and carries iron in the circulatory system. Approximately 70 % of iron is carried into the bone marrow and bound to hemoglobin. The rest is stored in tissues as ferritin. Exceptionally high levels usually occur in connection with iron deficiency. Low levels occur in connection with nourishment disorders, protein loss, chronic inflammation or malignancies.
