SERUM IRON (fasted, serum)

Iron is a crucial mineral needed for the formation of red blood cells, energy production, and DNA synthesis. Serum iron measures the iron bound to transferrin (iron-carrying protein) in the blood. Decreased serum iron levels are associated with inflammation, absorption disorders, and undernourishment. Increased levels are usually associated with excessive use of iron supplements, iron poisoning or many forms of anemia.

Reference ranges:

  • Adults: 9–34 μmol/l
  • Optimal: 12.53–22.38 μmol/l

Serum iron levels in the optimal range are associated with lower all-cause mortality, cancer risk and overall risk for multiple diseases.
