About Proline

Proline is a nonessential amino acid that the body can manufacture from another amino acid called glutamic acid. Proline is the precursor to hydroxyproline, a major amino acid found in the body's connective tissue – collagen, which can be found in the skin, bones, and joints. As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen is essential in maintaining the proper structure and strength of connective tissue, such as bones, skin, cartilage and blood vessels.

Proline plays an important role in protein synthesis, structure and metabolism. This nonessential amino acid is also involved in wound healing, antioxidant reactions, and immune response and is used for skin healing.

In the intestines, proline ensures the normal functioning of the gut-specific lymphoid tissue (GALT) and maintains the mucous membrane. Proline plays a crucial role in the production of IgA lymphocytes (immunoglobulin A).

Moreover, the immune system needs the proline to produce the proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs). These play an important role in regulating the immune system, controlling inflammation and protecting against toxins, especially in the intestines and brain. Proline-rich polypeptides are most abundant in colostrum. Proline-rich polypeptides may be beneficial in treating Alzheimer’s disease to reduce the formation of amyloid plaques.

Athletes who meet their daily protein needs through diet alone by consuming protein from various foods don’t necessarily need extra amino acid supplementation. However, in some cases, such as being injured, having good proline levels can help with wound healing. Getting advice from your doctor or health care practitioner before adding supplements to your daily routine is recommended.
