PLATELET COUNT (PLT)
Platelets are disc-shaped cells that move around in the blood. They activate when there is bleeding or other injuries. In such cases, platelets pile together to patch the injury and stop the bleeding. A low level of platelets is commonly caused by certain medications, the slowing down of bone marrow function (leukemia or lymphoma), genetic factors, chemotherapy, kidney disease, or long-term excessive alcohol use. A high level of platelets is either caused by primary (essential) thrombocytosis, the cause of which is usually not known, or secondary thrombocytosis caused by anemia, cancer, inflammation or infection.
A comprehensive population study found that a higher number of platelets (285 x E9/l) is associated with a higher occurrence of silent inflammation than the lowest value (211 x E9/l). Silent inflammation is often behind many chronic illnesses (see section “Highly sensitive CRP” for more information).
Fish oil (omega-3 fatty acids) and polyphenols can be used to lower high platelet levels in the blood. Low levels can be elevated with vitamin B12, folate and Vitamin D.
Reference ranges:
- Adults: 145–360 x E9/l
- Optimal: 200–270 x E9/l
Platelet count in the optimal range is associated with the lowest risk of all-cause mortality in various populations and age groups.
