Foundations
Use an HRV monitor like Polar H10, OURA ring, Garmin, or Whoop.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a widely used metric to assess autonomic nervous system (ANS) function and balance, particularly the interaction between the sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest) branches. It measures the variability in time between consecutive heartbeats (R-R intervals). HRV monitors can be a useful tool in detecting overtraining by observing changes in ANS activity.
If an individual is experiencing consistently low HRV scores, this could be indicative of chronic stress or overtraining.
On the other hand, increased day-to-day variability in HRV values can indicate fluctuations in the body's ability to manage stress, which might be a sign of overtraining.
Performing an orthostatic test (measuring HRV in both lying and standing positions) can reveal alterations in autonomic balance that might be indicative of overtraining.
Along with reduced HRV, an elevated resting heart rate is often observed in overtrained individuals due to increased sympathetic activity.
A sauna, infrared sauna, and/or cold plunge will be beneficial between workouts.
Instructions
- Go for a hard exercise session lasting 60-80 minutes on a day you’ve rested well.
- Measure your heart rate zones with an HR monitor.
- Within 1-2 hours after the workout go to the sauna for 20-30 minutes.
- You can follow this with a cold plunge or cold shower but don’t do it for any longer than 1-2 minutes.
- Make sure you eat enough nutritious foods, including protein and carbohydrates. Ideally, this happens within a 2-hour window before or after the workout.
- In the evening optimize your sleep routine and get plenty of sleep.
- The next day measure your HRV and sleep quality to assess recovery. If you’re still under-recovered and with a lower HRV than normal, then take it easy and use the sauna instead and take a cold plunge or cold shower.
