How to supplement with iron

Iron supplements sold at the pharmacy (either over the counter or by prescription) are effective in raising the iron levels in the body to normal. However, in some cases, they may cause constipation or other unpleasant side effects. Certain forms are gentler for the stomach and absorb better, such as iron bisglycinate.

According to studies, iron supplements should be taken once per day, in the morning (40–80 mg). Higher doses are commonly used but this increases the risk of stomach issues. It also does not significantly increase absorption.
