“Greasing the groove is my absolute favorite way of moving my body. By keeping it active throughout the day, not only does it improve my cognitive functions and keep my body fit, but also prevents any possible negative side effects related to sitting and office work.“ – Olli Sovijärvi
Overview
The saying “grease the groove” (GTG) refers to short, almost playful exercises conducted throughout the day that place significantly less strain on the nervous system whilst yielding results along being fun. For example, you could do a few pull-ups each time you pass under a scaffold. You could also break up the working day with intermittent push-ups, squat jumps or dashes in the stairs. Lastly, nature and the outdoors offer endless possibilities.
The Grease the Groove (GTG) strength training approach gently integrates exercise into your daily routine, enhancing physical strength and neural adaptations. With its foundation in specificity and frequent practice, GTG offers a sustainable pathway to build strength without the exhaustive stress of conventional workouts.
The GTG method involves performing submaximal repetitions of an exercise throughout the day. Instead of engaging in a concentrated workout, participants scatter sets of a chosen exercise across their day, always avoiding fatigue and never reaching failure. This approach reinforces motor patterns and facilitates muscle engagement and strength buildup without strain.

Foundations
The Grease the Groove method centers on performing frequent, submaximal repetitions of a specific exercise throughout the day to enhance strength, endurance and neural efficiency without inducing fatigue or failure.
Instructions
- Identify Movement
- Choose movements or exercises you wish to incorporate - strength training, stretching, mobility exercises, or mindful breathing.
- Bodyweight movements are readily available for everyone (push-ups, squats, planks, jumping jacks, lunges, etc.)
- Try pull-ups, kettlebell swings, ring dips and other kettlebell movements. You can also use an X3 bar strength training platform (resistance bands).
- The most important thing is to move your body!
2. Understand Your Capacity
- For each chosen movement, understand your capacity and limits. Know the maximum repetitions for strength exercises or duration for stretches and mobility work.
3. Plan Submaximal Sets
- Work with 40-60% of your maximum capacity. Plan for short, manageable sets that can be easily integrated into breaks during your day.
4. Integrate into Daily Routine
- Schedule sets of your movements throughout the day, especially during low energy or tension periods, to improve focus and reduce stress.
- If working in an office, utilize your workspace effectively to perform these movements without disturbing your work environment.
5. Consistency is Key
- Perform the movements consistently daily, integrating them seamlessly into your routine without causing fatigue or disrupting your daily tasks.
6. Mind Your Form
- Regardless of the movement type, always maintain proper form to maximize benefits and prevent potential injuries.
7. Adjust Based on Feedback
- Pay attention to your body’s response. Adjust accordingly if a movement becomes too easy or doesn’t provide the expected relief or boost.
8. Have fun!
- Enjoy moving your body and be playful with the movements. Exercise always with joy :)
Conclusion
Grease The Groove is particularly beneficial when incorporated throughout the day. Engaging in frequent, low-intensity exercise sessions offers several health advantages. These include the following:
Consistent Muscle Engagement:
- The method prompts continuous muscle activation, fostering strength without promoting excessive fatigue or strain, allowing for daily practice and consistent improvement.
Neural Adaptation:
- Frequent practice enhances the body’s neural adaptations, refining motor patterns, and improving the efficiency and efficacy of each movement, leading to smoother and stronger execution of exercises.
Mitigated Risk of Injury:
- Since GTG avoids training to failure, it significantly reduces the risk of overtraining and related injuries, promoting a safer strength-building environment.
Improved Metabolism:
- Engaging muscles throughout the day subtly boosts metabolism, aiding in weight management and promoting a leaner physique.
Enhanced Functional Strength:
- GTG improves strength in a way directly transferable to various physical activities and daily tasks, enhancing your functional capabilities and overall quality of life.
Flexibility and Convenience:
- This method easily integrates into any schedule, providing flexibility and making strength training accessible and doable for individuals with various lifestyles and commitments.
Implementing the GTG method means consciously integrating movement into your day's fabric. With its emphasis on consistent, submaximal effort, Grease the Groove provides a structure for steady strength development while accommodating the rhythm of your daily life.
