ESTIMATED GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE (EGFR)

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) measures kidney function. The test is based on the creatinine levels in the serum, using a calculation formula including sex and age. Normally, the renal corpuscles filter approximately 180–200 liters of blood daily. eGFR indicates the volume of blood filtered by the kidneys per minute.
The calculation is performed using the MDRD equation.

• Men: GFR = 175 x (S -Cr/88.4)-1.154 x Age-0.203
• Women: GFR = 175 x (S -Cr/88.4)-1.154 x Age-0.203 x 0.742

The unit is ml/min/1.73 m2. The patient body weight is not required as the result is normalized per the average adult body surface area of 1.73 m2.

NB! This test can only be used for adults over the age of 18.

The test has been most widely reviewed for use in connection with patients with kidney deficiency. The formula is less useful for healthy individuals or those with only mildly impaired kidney function. Due to this, in the healthy and mild deficiency area, the result given is “greater than 60” ml/min/1.73 m2.
