“Circadian rhythms are your body’s master regulators. If you want your body to work like clockwork you need to have your circadian rhythms aligned." – Siim Land
Overview
In this challenge, you will learn the power of circadian rhythms in regulating your body’s biology and how to achieve the optimal circadian rhythm for longevity and thriving.
For optimal health, you must maintain a consistent and relatively optimized circadian rhythm as it affects all longevity pathways in the body. Being misaligned slowly breaks down your body’s circadian clocks, which accelerates aging.
The objective is to fix irregular sleeping patterns, improve daytime energy, and maintain consistent fluctuations in the main circadian hormones of the body.
The challenge is reestablishing the optimal circadian rhythm that optimizes bodily functions and sleep cycles. Then you should stick to it consistently for as long as possible.
Foundations
Recommended tools include blue light-blocking glasses, a sleep mask or dark blackout curtains, and sunlight in the morning or a bright face lamp.
Instructions
- After waking up, go outside to expose yourself to bright daylight. If it’s dark or wintertime, then use a bright face lamp.
- Try to go outside throughout the day as well.
- Regular physical activity can also support circadian rhythm alignment.
- In the evening, dim the lights and start blocking out blue light 1 hour before bed. You may also want to change the lighting in your apartment to red or orange – Salt lamps and smart lamps can help. Mobile device, laptop, or TV use is not recommended without limiting the bright light. You may also want to utilize the night mode on your device and an application like F.lux on your computer.
- Sleep in pitch-black darkness for 7-8 hours. Optionally use a sleep mask.
Conclusion
Circadian rhythm is the natural, internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and repeats roughly every 24 hours. It can refer to any biological process that displays an endogenous, entrainable oscillation of about 24 hours. Aligning with one's circadian rhythm is crucial for overall well-being and health, and maintaining consistent wake and sleep times can help align with it.
- Promotes deeper, more restorative sleep, which is crucial for physical and mental health, alertness, and reduced daytime sleepiness.
- Leads to a more stable mood and lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Contributes to improved concentration, memory, and cognitive function.
- Maintaining a healthy immune system makes the body more capable of fighting illnesses and infections.
- Improves physical performance, recovery, and muscle growth.
- Helps to regulate appetite and reduce the risk of metabolic disorders.
To reap these benefits, it’s important to maintain consistent sleep and wake times, even on weekends.
